Taxmageddon Would Wreak Havoc on Oregon Taxpayers Sven R. Larson, Ph.D.
By now, I am sure you have heard of Taxmageddon – the $494 billion tax increase set to hit America’s already overburdened taxpayers in January 2013. If you haven’t, check out this informative website provided by the Heritage Foundation. Taxmageddon is a combination of expiring Bush-era tax cuts, expiring payroll tax cuts, and new incoming ObamaCare taxes. Together they will create the largest single-year tax increase in American history and very likely the largest tax increase ever created in the entire world.
Obama Guts Welfare Reform Obama has overturned Congress and the law again. His Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an official policy directive rewriting the welfare reform law of 1996. The new policy guts the federal work requirementsthat were the foundation of the Clinton-era reform.
Welfare reform replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children with a new program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The whole point was that able-bodied adults should be required to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving welfare aid.
This reform was very successful.TANF became the only welfare program (out of more than 70) that promoted greater self-reliance. It moved 2.8 million families off the welfare rolls and into jobs so that they were providing for themselves. Recipients were required to perform at least 20–30 hours per week of work or job preparation activities in exchange for the cash benefit.
Now, Obama's HHS is claiming that it can waive those work requirements that are at the heart of the law, and without Congress's consent.

Jobs Jobs Jobs...
The House Republicans presented several bills that would bring Oregonians back to work, including HB 4098, which I sponsored, in order to increase timber harvest in state forests. Unfortunately, HB 4098 died in the Ways and Means Committee.
The legislature has yet to pass many of the job bills that were on the House Republican's agenda, but we remain hopeful. For more information regarding the House Republican Job Agenda, the Oregonian provided a great story. For the full story, read "Oregon's Real Jobs Get Thrown Under Bus.”
Some success: HB 4093 sponsored by Co-Speaker Bruce Hanna(R), expands enterprise zone opportunities throughout Oregon. These zones have already proven to be successful, and this bill allows the program to grow. Before passage of this bill, Oregon's enterprise zone program was statutorily maxed-out. HB 4093 adds the possibility of eight new zones and allows for current, successful enterprise zones to be extended by local government from a 12-15 mile area. The Oregon Economic Development Association, League of Oregon cities, and Association of Oregon Counties all testified in support of the bill before the House Revenue Committee earlier this month. The bill passed both Houses, but Corvallis was intentionally excluded by the Senate.
Gun Bills...
There were several gun bills presented in the legislature during this short session, but only two bills have seen legislative action: HB 4045 and SB 1594.
HB 4045 prohibits public bodies from disclosing the names or other private information of concealed handgun license (CHL) holders except under strict circumstances. This new legislation would allow CHL holders to have more protection from the public obtaining their information, while still ensuring the safety of the public because the Sheriff's Office would have access to all records.
SB 1594, sponsored by Senate President Peter Courtney, would have allowed school districts, community colleges and the Oregon University System to adopt rules prohibiting concealed weapons on school grounds. The bill cleared the Senate Rules Committee but failed to pass on the Senate floor with a 15-14 vote.
The Oregon Legislature will adjourn on Monday, March 5.

When I was about 9 years old I remember asking my dad about Castro. I asked, "Is Castro a good guy or bad?"
Dad said...he couldn't tell!! This was about 1955. We were living in Louisiana at the time. Dad was in the Army and stationed there. Cuba was fairly close and in the news a lot. The Cubans were asking the same question! Ike was president.
This past July 4th, we had the pleasure of sharing a summer barbecue with a refugee from Cuba. This refugee came to the United States as a young boy in the early 1960's. His family was more fortunate than most, as they were able to bring a suitcase and $100 when they fled Castro's newly formed ‘revolutionary paradise. Our dinner conversation began with a simple discussion about our country and the direction it has taken since Barack Obama came to power. We shared the usual complaints about the sour economy and liberal social engineering emanating from the rulers in Washington.
But then he said it. The sentence flowed naturally from our refugee guest. I assume it was unplanned. But it carried the weight of a freight train. "You know, when Castro took power none of us knew he was a Communist.” We sat stunned. He continued, "Yes, we all thought he was a patriot, a nationalist. Before the revolution he didn't sound like a radical." The comparison at this point was easy, and I interjected, "You mean just like Barack Obama?" He responded; "Yes, just like Barack Obama."
He continued, "We were all shocked as the government just continued to grab more power. First they said the revolution is over, so please turn in your guns. We all complied. I also remember my uncle saying: ‘Castro will only nationalize some of the big industries. He will never come and take our family hardware store!!’ But that is exactly what happened. Castro started with the sugar mills and the large industries, but they eventually came and knocked on the door of our family hardware store. My family had run this store for generations. They said we now own the hardware store, you work for us. And that four-bedroom home you own...it is now our property too. You have to move yourself and the five children into those two rooms of the house, because others are moving in here with you."
The lesson learned from this discussion is a lesson most Americans refuse to hear. Political leaders can lie about their agenda and once in office, they can take totally unexpected turns. If you had asked us three years ago if we thought General Motors or Chrysler would be nationalized, we would have never believed it. We could never contemplate a country where the rule of law, the most fundamental building block of a justice society...would be evaporating, just like it did in Castro's Cuba in the early 1960's.
But the news of injustice keeps increasing; Black Panthers are not charged with wrong doing by the U.S. Department of Justice... because their crimes are against whites. The bond holders of GM are stripped of their assets...without being given due process by the government; Car Dealerships are closed without due process (example: Randy Jones Chevrolet in Corvallis); Governmental leaders are bribed in full daylight...only to have all investigation of the crimes stifled...by the Attorney General. The U.S. borders are overrun with crime and illegal activity, and the leaders in D.C. act as if it is important to protect the lawbreakers...while the innocent are killed and overrun; When local communities attempt to enforce the law, they are ridiculed...and threatened as racists and bigots. They are sued by the very administration entrusted with enforcing the law. Without the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution is a sham!! Without the rule of law, our beloved America is swiftly becoming a country where only the well-connected and politically powerful will be safe.
As an author recently and so eloquently explained in her most recent book..."a culture of corruption has replaced honest government" (Michelle Malkin). The only way this problem will be fixed, is by massive citizen action. All honest citizens who want to be treated equally must come together...and demand that the favoritism, the bribes, the uneven enforcement of law...end now!! And yes, it can happen if we all pull together.

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES
Families and businesses have budgets, yet Washington doesn't -- and it hasn't for the last three years… For Congress, the budget is an outline of how and where money will be spent across the federal government and how high taxes and borrowing will be. The budget guides all spending, tax, and reform bills that must be passed during the year, and Congress is obligated to pass one every year. Despite those facts -- and even with a $15 trillion national debt -- Senator Reid last week said, "We do not need to bring a budget to the floor this year," disavowing the entire budgeting process... Why does a budget matter? It's all about priorities. And if Washington doesn't govern with one, well, it isn't governing. Instead, Congress is avoiding the tough decisions it must make to get our twin crises of spending and debt under control. The first step to doing that is to pass a budget, like the House did last year and intends to this year. Otherwise, spending will continue to spiral out of control, and no choices will be made about what is important and what is not.
The twenty-two states that have not required workers to join a union and pay union dues have enjoyed, as a group, more rapid employment and income growth, better job preservation, and faster recoveries from recession. Oregon is not one of those states, yet. Right-to-work laws provide job seekers and current employees the right to work for a company whether or not they choose to join a union. It is unconscionable that workers are denied the right to earn a living simply because they decline to join a union. Basic principles of liberty and justice demand that we defend everyone’s right to work without third party interference. The right to work is, therefore, a moral as well as an economic imperative. President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are entering negotiations over -- or seeking ratification of -- five treaties that could radically limit our national sovereignty and the reach of our democratic institutions. Particularly scary is that the treaties, once signed and ratified, have the same status as constitutional law and cannot be altered or eclipsed by Congress or state legislatures. And their provisions must be enforced by U.S. courts. Those who wish to preserve our sovereignty and democratic control over our future must rally to block these treaties, either by pressing Obama and Clinton not to sign them or by blocking their ratification.
In the coming weeks the House will vote on the American Energy & Infrastructure Jobs Act (H.R.7), a pro-growth bill that removes barriers to new American energy production to create more than a million new jobs, and cuts red tape to speed up improvements to our roads and bridges (without the earmarks, wasteful spending, and taxpayer bailouts of the past). Watch Speaker Boehner talk about the pro-growth aspects of the American Energy & Infrastructure Jobs Act, which uses revenue from new energy production to help pay for repairs to highways and bridges. With the start of legislative session on February 1st, we are embroiled in a battle for the next 35 days to protect our liberty and freedoms. Please take the time to join us in room 350 (war room) at the Oregon Capitol on February 15th, 22nd and the 27th through the end of session. The room will be open from 8 a.m. until the legislature concludes for the day. We will be informing folks on the bills and hearings taking place that week and using the Oregon citizen lobby analysis to craft testimony that can be used to talk to legislators either for or against priority legislation. - Ensures taxpayer dollars are spent on highways – not ‘beautification’ projects and other non-highway activities;
- Cuts the permitting time in half by speeding up bureaucratic approvals,

Fast Facts...
- First quarter personal income tax collections were down $22 million (3.5 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Fourth quarter corporate income tax collections were up $3.6 million (5.2 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Oregon personal income was down $2.1 billion (1.5 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Oregon employment was up 15,028 jobs (0.9 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Our numbers sure look better compared to the 2009-2011 budget, but history has shown that state economic and revenue forecasts are often wrong. That's why it's important to maintain significant reserves to prevent further cuts in the future.
- It's all about jobs, and this revenue forecast depends on robust job growth. More jobs mean more revenue to fund the programs and services we depend on.
- In the final weeks of session, the Legislature should refocus on private sector job creation and pass reforms that allow us to attract and retain employers.

Members of the HRC receive no compensation and attend 1-2 regular evening meetings, typically 2-3 hours in length each month. Qualified applicants will demonstrate a positive interest, competence or knowledge in historic preservation; prior experience in quasi-judicial decision making; and/or a community-wide perspective on balancing multiple objectives associated with community planning. Obama's Supreme Court Appointee can turn up the heat...
From the Benton Co. Republicans Newsletter, 5/9/2010: OBAMA’S SUPREME COURT APPOINTEE CAN TURN UP THE HEAT ON OUR CONSTITUTIONAs you read this, President Obama is interviewing candidates to replace Justice Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court. ∴ We do not doubt that he will choose a 21st Century Constitutionalist (who wants to change our Constitution to be a “living, breathing document” that bears no resemblance to our current Constitution), and we will move ever closer to a government by appointed judges, rather than elected representatives. ∴ Stephen Markman, former Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and Assistant Attorney General under President Ronald Reagan is now a distinguished professor of constitutional law at Hillsdale College. ∴ In the April “Imprimis” Markman warns us:
- By 2030 the U.S. Constitution may not bear any resemblance to the Framers’ Constitution of 1787 that has guided our nation for two centuries and has rendered it the freest, most prosperous and most creative nation in the history of the world.
- Proponent of a “21st century constitution” or “living constitution” aim to transform our nation’s supreme law beyond recognition—and with a minimum of public attention and debate. (We’ll be too distracted by all the crises the media bombards us with every day).
- The overarching theme that 21st century constitutionalists are driving for is to replace our system of republican government, in which our Constitution is largely focused to minimize the likelihood of abuse of power. In its place they want a system of judicial government, in which major policy outcomes are increasingly determined by federal judges. Oh, we’ll still have elections, but the legislature will not have the power to make the big decisions. That will be left to the appointed court justices.
- The new constitution would compel specific outcomes. The important decisions would increasingly be undertaken by courts, especially by federal courts. Example: the California courts are already making the important decisions, instead of the millions of voters in the state. Racial quotas, social services funding, and immigration policy in California have been routinely overturned by single judges acting in the name of the Constitution—not the Framers’ Constitution, but a “constitution for our times,” a “living constitution, resembling, sadly, the constitutions of failed and despotic nations across the globe.

Now, just weeks after the Democrats rammed their version of healthcare reform down our throats, WE GET THE TRUTH. Economic experts say that adding 34 million persons to the coverage rolls will actually raise spending by at least 2 percent, and probably more, over the next 10 years.
Guess what? Medicare cuts “may be unrealistic and unsustainable” and will drive hospitals into the red, “possibly jeopardizing access” to care for senior citizens!!!
We told them. We begged them. “DON’T PASS THIS POORLY THOUGHT OUT, HURRIEDLY CRAFTED LEGISLATION.
But the Democrat super-majority is blind to anything but their twin goals of more power and putting our nation fully on the Socialist track.
We have just one recourse.
In 2010, throw out the Democrats. Elect Republicans and charge them with the responsibility to:
Michael Steel and the Southern Strategy

_David Weigel, at The Washington Post, asked me to comment on Michael Steele's view of the so-called Southern Strategy.
Speaking at DePaul University on April 20, RNC Chairman Michael Steele urged Republican leaders to work with the Tea Parties. He has the right approach, to which I would add the fact, per my article on BigGovernment.com, that The Republican Party began as a Tea Party Movement.
Steele then went on to say:
Chairman Steele's analysis of the so-called "southern strategy" is a bit too simplistic and could use some historical context. Since the end of Reconstruction the GOP scarcely existed in most of the South until the 1950s. In fact, in 1952 the Republican Party was so weak there that Dwight Eisenhower had to rely on "Veterans for Eisenhower" organizations to conduct much of his campaign in the region.
So firm was the Democrat grip on the white southern vote that prior to Richard Nixon's 1960 campaign, no Republican presidential candidate had ever done much campaigning in the South. That year he broke new ground by deciding to campaign in every state. Prior to legislative advances of the civil rights movement -- initiated by the GOP's 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Acts -- few African-Americans could vote in the Democrat-controlled South. As a result, Nixon's campaigning in southern states was perforce directed toward the people who could vote there, mostly the whites.
Regarding his decision to campaign in the South as some kind of cynical ploy is to ignore Nixon's civil rights achievements while serving as Eisenhower's vice president. He was instrumental in breaking the Democrat filibuster against the 1957 Civil Rights Act and called for racial integration of public schools long before John Kennedy or Lyndon Johnson did.

GLENN BECK: American Heading Toward the Wrong Tracks
Glenn Beck, national conservative talk show host, is doing his best to educate America. His railroad track analogy does a great job of helping us understand the European system of Socialism and how close we are to becoming a Socialist nation.
In Europe, it’s been kings and rulers, (then) fascists and communists that are the left and right rails of the track that carries the European train. In 1791, America diverged from those tracks.
What ties Europe’s two rails together? SOCIALISM.
How do you build a railroad track? You have to put down the ties first. Once you get the ties down then you lay the rails. Laying the rails is the easy part.
You have to get the FOUNDATION right first. It’s taken PROGRESSIVES a hundred years (to change the foundation) of America because our railroad ties were different a hundred years ago. And we have purposely neglected them, been told to neglect them, been told to dismiss them so they would fall in disrepair.
What is the engine that runs on this track? THE FREE MARKET! That’s where progress comes from.
It wasn’t a government that invented the light bulb. It wasn’t the government that came up with the assembly line. It wasn’t the government that came up with the potbelly stove. It was people using the principles (the railroad ties) of the Constitution and equal justice, holding our tracks together on the right road that allows that FREE MARKET engine to push forward and create whatever it is you want to create.
What do you build if you’re on the communist track? Light bulbs? NO. GULAGS.
What do you build if you’re on the Nazi track? Automobiles? NO. DEATH CAMPS.
What happened to the FREE MARKET engine in America?
People are saying the free market is evil, the free market is bad. No, the free market just IS. It’s running on railroad ties that have been disassembled and are in disrepair. The rails are crooked and they are not running right. PROGRESSIVES have brought this American FREE MARKET train back down to the European railroad ties and rails, which is SOCIALISM.
That’s the tie: SOCIALISM. On the right rail in Europe, it’s Nazism and fascism. In Europe on the left rail, it’s communism. And SOCIALISM is what ties them together and allows both of them to run. It’s BIG GOVERNMENT socialized structure.
What are the ties in America? Faith, hope, charity, self-reliance, personal responsibility, accountability, honesty, integrity. They are the values and principles that are the ties. And they have been disintegrating. We haven’t been updating them. We haven’t been refreshing them. We haven’t been shoring them up. We’ve been taking them apart.
In America, what are the rails?
The first rail is the Constitution and the second rail is equal justice under the law. Washington said we’re a nation of laws, not of men. Meaning, Timothy Geithner, PAY YOUR TAXES! I have to. Meaning, you know and I know that if I did what Goldman Sachs did or any of these other weasels that are not being pointed out, I wouldn’t be getting bailed out. I’d go to jail; so would you. EQUAL JUSTICE.
It’s what Martin Luther King fought for. Now it’s been perverted. King didn’t say I want more justice. He said I want equal justice. Martin Luther King said, I have a dream. Where white children and black children can play together, can be together. That you will judge a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin.
We’re talking about appointing a Supreme Court justice on diversity. Diversity? We should have CHARACTER! CHARACTER is a railroad tie, and we were told a decade ago that character doesn’t matter. YES IT DOES!
CHARACTER doesn’t matter in the European style system. If you have socialism, character doesn’t matter. Position matters. Power maters. Character doesn’t matter.
We cannot fix the free market system, because it’s not broken. The RAILROAD TIES are broken. Faith hope and charity are the answers. You’ve got to fix YOU!
The answer isn’t more government. YOU make the difference in your own life. Commit yourself today. I will be honest in all of my business dealings. I will be honest in everything I do. No matter what that truth is, I will seek the truth.
Seeking truth is a never-ending journey….
Thank God of our Founding Father, because it’s my right to pursue it because it makes me happy to pursue the truth. And that pursuit is going to cause tension.
Many Americans want to continue to live the lie that you can have everything, that character doesn’t matter, that you can rack up debt and it doesn’t matter. Getting them out of that lie is going to be uncomfortable.
But tension – struggle – is good. Violence is bad.

"We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans. This party was co-founded by blacks, among them Frederick Douglass. The Republican Party had a hand in forming the NAACP, and yet we have mistreated that relationship. People don't walk away from parties. Their parties walk away from them. For the last 40- plus years we had a 'Southern Strategy' that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, 'Bubba' went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton."Chairman Steele makes an interesting point, but he is accepting as true the Democrat version of events. The theme of Back to Basics for the Republican Party is that celebrating our party's heritage is not just for minority outreach but for all Republicans to appreciate that the GOP has been a great force for good ever since being founded in 1854 to oppose the Democrats' pro-slavery, anti-freedom agenda. I drew on that record of achievement in writing the historical information on the RNC website, also posted as Heroes and Heroics.
Chairman Steele's analysis of the so-called "southern strategy" is a bit too simplistic and could use some historical context. Since the end of Reconstruction the GOP scarcely existed in most of the South until the 1950s. In fact, in 1952 the Republican Party was so weak there that Dwight Eisenhower had to rely on "Veterans for Eisenhower" organizations to conduct much of his campaign in the region.
So firm was the Democrat grip on the white southern vote that prior to Richard Nixon's 1960 campaign, no Republican presidential candidate had ever done much campaigning in the South. That year he broke new ground by deciding to campaign in every state. Prior to legislative advances of the civil rights movement -- initiated by the GOP's 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Acts -- few African-Americans could vote in the Democrat-controlled South. As a result, Nixon's campaigning in southern states was perforce directed toward the people who could vote there, mostly the whites.
Regarding his decision to campaign in the South as some kind of cynical ploy is to ignore Nixon's civil rights achievements while serving as Eisenhower's vice president. He was instrumental in breaking the Democrat filibuster against the 1957 Civil Rights Act and called for racial integration of public schools long before John Kennedy or Lyndon Johnson did.

GLENN BECK: American Heading Toward the Wrong Tracks
Glenn Beck, national conservative talk show host, is doing his best to educate America. His railroad track analogy does a great job of helping us understand the European system of Socialism and how close we are to becoming a Socialist nation.
In Europe, it’s been kings and rulers, (then) fascists and communists that are the left and right rails of the track that carries the European train. In 1791, America diverged from those tracks.
What ties Europe’s two rails together? SOCIALISM.
How do you build a railroad track? You have to put down the ties first. Once you get the ties down then you lay the rails. Laying the rails is the easy part.
You have to get the FOUNDATION right first. It’s taken PROGRESSIVES a hundred years (to change the foundation) of America because our railroad ties were different a hundred years ago. And we have purposely neglected them, been told to neglect them, been told to dismiss them so they would fall in disrepair.
What is the engine that runs on this track? THE FREE MARKET! That’s where progress comes from.
It wasn’t a government that invented the light bulb. It wasn’t the government that came up with the assembly line. It wasn’t the government that came up with the potbelly stove. It was people using the principles (the railroad ties) of the Constitution and equal justice, holding our tracks together on the right road that allows that FREE MARKET engine to push forward and create whatever it is you want to create.
What do you build if you’re on the communist track? Light bulbs? NO. GULAGS.
What do you build if you’re on the Nazi track? Automobiles? NO. DEATH CAMPS.
What happened to the FREE MARKET engine in America?
People are saying the free market is evil, the free market is bad. No, the free market just IS. It’s running on railroad ties that have been disassembled and are in disrepair. The rails are crooked and they are not running right. PROGRESSIVES have brought this American FREE MARKET train back down to the European railroad ties and rails, which is SOCIALISM.
That’s the tie: SOCIALISM. On the right rail in Europe, it’s Nazism and fascism. In Europe on the left rail, it’s communism. And SOCIALISM is what ties them together and allows both of them to run. It’s BIG GOVERNMENT socialized structure.
What are the ties in America? Faith, hope, charity, self-reliance, personal responsibility, accountability, honesty, integrity. They are the values and principles that are the ties. And they have been disintegrating. We haven’t been updating them. We haven’t been refreshing them. We haven’t been shoring them up. We’ve been taking them apart.
In America, what are the rails?
The first rail is the Constitution and the second rail is equal justice under the law. Washington said we’re a nation of laws, not of men. Meaning, Timothy Geithner, PAY YOUR TAXES! I have to. Meaning, you know and I know that if I did what Goldman Sachs did or any of these other weasels that are not being pointed out, I wouldn’t be getting bailed out. I’d go to jail; so would you. EQUAL JUSTICE.
It’s what Martin Luther King fought for. Now it’s been perverted. King didn’t say I want more justice. He said I want equal justice. Martin Luther King said, I have a dream. Where white children and black children can play together, can be together. That you will judge a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin.
We’re talking about appointing a Supreme Court justice on diversity. Diversity? We should have CHARACTER! CHARACTER is a railroad tie, and we were told a decade ago that character doesn’t matter. YES IT DOES!
CHARACTER doesn’t matter in the European style system. If you have socialism, character doesn’t matter. Position matters. Power maters. Character doesn’t matter.
We cannot fix the free market system, because it’s not broken. The RAILROAD TIES are broken. Faith hope and charity are the answers. You’ve got to fix YOU!
The answer isn’t more government. YOU make the difference in your own life. Commit yourself today. I will be honest in all of my business dealings. I will be honest in everything I do. No matter what that truth is, I will seek the truth.
Seeking truth is a never-ending journey….
Thank God of our Founding Father, because it’s my right to pursue it because it makes me happy to pursue the truth. And that pursuit is going to cause tension.
Many Americans want to continue to live the lie that you can have everything, that character doesn’t matter, that you can rack up debt and it doesn’t matter. Getting them out of that lie is going to be uncomfortable.
But tension – struggle – is good. Violence is bad.

Newsletter: Local Media Supports Tea Parties (4/19)

On Thursday, April 15, thousands of Oregonians came together to celebrate freedom. They made a powerful statement to our government that it must return to operating within its Constitutional limits. THANK YOU TO THE HUNDRED OF PEOPLE IN BENTON COUNTY WHO PARTICIPATED!
What the ‘tea partiers’ want, Hasso Hering’s Commentary (appearing Albany D-H, Corvallis G-T on Sunday, April 18) - Now that we’ve had some more “tea party” events in the mid-valley and the rest of the state, we know that the detractors are wrong when they roundly dismiss these citizens as “extremists” or slander them as right-wing nuts….what’s wrong with and lighthearted approach to serious concerns?....
So what do these tea party people want?
“Save the Constitution,” said the sign of veteran in a wheelchair at the Corvallis rally on Thursday. Egads! How extremist can you get?
“Vote them all out,” said another. It may not be practical and it won’t happen considering how rigged our political system is to protect incumbents. But it’s not exactly a radical notion. In theory our system is built on the idea that citizens are represented by legislators from their own ranks who rotate out of office after a few terms. Nothing in the state or federal constitutions suggests the drafters had in mind a permanent class of political rulers insulated from the public and protected, on the pretext of preventing corruption, by regulations making it hard to run for office.
At the Albany rally, many of the people said they were concerned about the government debt and about taxes rising under President Obama.
The debt is a legitimate worry. It has been going up for a long time, but lately it has shot up like a rocket. So it’s healthy for more people to get concerned, and there’s nothing extremist about it at all.
The tea party demonstrators are against “socialism,” which immediately causes critics to challenge them to forgo veterans’ and Social Security benefits or be proved hypocrites. But those are benefits the recipients have earned, sometimes at the risk of their lives, and in the case of Social Security by a lifetime of paying into the system.
The kind of “socialism” the tea partiers are against is the kind that vastly expands the powers of government over everyone under the pretext of helping people who can’t help themselves or have made little effort to try.
But as the signs and flags and comments show, the most important thing the tea party protesters want is to hold on to the personal the economic freedom that Americans have by tradition enjoyed.
Our freedom is slipping away because of diverse forces – among them the effects of multiplying laws and regulations as well as corporations, technology and globalization.
Party functionaries and status-quo defenders may see any countervailing thought or force as out of step. We should be glad there are at least a few who are willing to stand up and shout” Stop! (hh)

The Republican Party Freed the Slaves in the District of Columbia
Republicans would benefit tremendously from appreciating the heritage of our Grand Old Party, founded in 1854 to oppose the Democrats' pro-slavery, anti-freedom agenda.
As they campaign for the mid-term elections, Republicans should ignore the lefty media spin and recognize that they hold the moral high ground. From the first chapter of Back to Basics for the Republican Party: "How can we expect to convince voters to place their confidence in us when we lack confidence in our own heritage."
Last Friday, the nation's capital celebrated Emancipation Day. In his proclamation, the Democrat mayor, Adrian Fenty, omits something very important: the holiday commemorates the Republican Party's abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia. That's right, the Republican Party freed the slaves in DC. And yes, the Democratic Party opposed freeing the slaves in DC -- a fact which Democrats today dare not mention.
During the Civil War, one of the nation's leading abolitionists was Senator Henry Wilson (R-MA), who would later serve as Vice President in the Ulysses Grant administration. In December 1861, Senator Wilson introduced a bill to abolish slavery in the District. The measure met with parliamentary obstacles from the Democrats, but Ben Wade (R-OH) outmaneuvered them. Six years later, had the bitterly racist Democrat, Andrew Johnson, been convicted during his impeachment trial, Senator Wade would have become President of the United States.
On April 16, 1862, the Republican-controlled 37th Congress passed Senator Wilson's bill. Overall, 99% of Republicans voted to free the slaves in the District of Columbia, while 83% of Democrats voted to keep them in chains. That day, the GOP freed more than three thousand African-Americans. Among them was Philip Reid, who while enslaved had made the statue that stands atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol.
While serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Abraham Lincoln sponsored a bill to abolish slavery in Washington, DC. As President, he proudly signed the District of Columbia Emancipation Act, announcing "I have never doubted the constitutional authority of congress to abolish slavery in this District; and I have ever desired to see the national capital freed from the institution." Emancipation Day finally arrived, thanks to Republican majorities in Congress.

Before the 2008 election, Acorn went through Oregon to recruit Democrat voters. After the D’s trashed President Bush for eight years, people were sick of negativity and wanted a different approach.
Disaffected Republicans (lured by years of the media trumpeting every accusation and negative thing they could imagine about President Bush and Republicans in general), unaligned voters were easy marks for Acorn to cause them to change their voter registration.
In Benton County in June of 2008, Dem voters outnumbered Republicans by nearly 3,000. ACORN tried to meet every voter. They scoured the county three different times. The result? Republicans lost 2,000 registered voters. Democrats gained 4,000 voters. Today, the Democrats outnumber the Republicans by 8,500 voters!!!
What to do? We must recognize the general voter dissatisfaction with the current administration.
NOW IS THE TIME TO INVITE VOTERS TO JOIN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WHOSE BASIC PRINCIPLES ARE FREEDOM TO DETERMINE OUR OWN DESTINY and FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. The Democrat Party is pulling us into Socialism and slavery. WE MUST ALL ACTIVELY RESIST!
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO TELEPHONE AND TO TAKE BALLOTS TO VOTERS WHO WANT TO CHANGE
WE NEED YOU to do the telephone contacting. WE NEED YOU to be standing by, ready to deliver ballots to voters who want to re-register.

Oregon’s Attorney General John Kroger announced this week that Oregon will not be among the states who will sue the federal government to reject Obamacare. However, attorney generals for 37 other states are looking at joining the lawsuit.
Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats in Congress have begun a campaign to tell you how wonderful Obamacare is.

- Beginning on April 1, those who may be open to changing Party registration will be telephoned on M-F from 5 to 8 p.m., on Saturday from 3-6 p.m. and on Sunday from 2-5 p.m.
- When callers find a person who wants to change their party registration, drivers will be contacted, and they will take a voter registration form to the person you just contacted, wait for the voter to fill out the form, and bring it Republican HQ to be turned into the county Elections Office.
- Telephoning must be completed by April 23, because in order to vote in the Republican Primary election you must be registered by April 24.
- You choose when you can call. You may call from Benton County Republican Headquarters or from home.
- You determine the hours that you are available to deliver ballots and return them to us.
- You determine how much calling you can do, but know that WE NEED YOU. As long as voters are registered Democrat, they will receive a continuing barrage of Democrat propaganda.

- You don’t want health insurance…you’re young, you need to minimize expenses because you’re starting a business. TOUGH. You must pay $750 annually anyway. (Sec 1501)
- You are healthy and want to pay for insurance that reflects that status. TOUGH. You must pay for coverage not only for yourself but for the guy who smokes three packs and drinks a gallon whiskey a day.(Sec 2701)
- You’d like to pay less in premiums by buying insurance with limits on coverage. TOUGH. Insurers will no longer be able to offer such policies. (Sec 2711)
- You want a policy that’s cheaper because it doesn’t cover preventive care. TOUGH. Even if customers wants that kind of policy, insurers can’t offer it. (Sec 2712)
- You’re an employer and want to offer coverage that doesn’t allow your employees’ slacker children to stay on the policy until age 26. TOUGH. Not allowed. (Sec 2714)
- You MUST buy a policy that covers ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment; prescription drugs; rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services; chronic disease management; and pediatric services, including oral and vision care. Hey, you’re a single guy without children. TOUGH! Your policy must cover pediatric care. You’re a woman who can’t have children! TOUGH. Your policy must cover maternity services. You’re a teetotaler. TOUGH! Your policy must cover substance abuse treatment. (Sec 1302)
- You want a plan with lots of cost-sharing and low premiums. The best you can do is a “Bronze plan,” which provides benefits that are actuarially equivalent to 60% of the value of the benefits of the plan. Lower than that, TOUGH. Sec 1302(d)(1)(A)
8. You’re a small business and want to offer policies with deductibles higher than $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for families. TOUGH. (Sec 1302(C)(2)(A)) - If you are a large employer (at least 50 employees) and you do not want to provide health insurance to your employees, TOUGH. You will pay at least a $750 fine per employee. (Sec 1513)
- You are an employer who offers health flexible spending arrangements and your employees want to deduct more than $2,500 from their salaries for it. TOUGH. No can do. (Sec 9005 (i))
- You’re a physician and you don’t want the government telling you what to do. TOUGH. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to use your claims data to issue you reports that measure the resources you use, provide information on the quality of care you provide, and compare the resources you use to those used by other physicians. - If you’re a physician and want to own your own hospital, you must be an owner and have a “Medicare provider agreement by December 31, 2010. If you don’t have these by then, you are out of luck. Sec 6001(i)(1)(A)
- If you are a physician owner and want to expand your hospital, TOUGH. Well, unless it is located in a country where, over the last five years, population growth has been 150% of what it has been in the U.S. (Sec 6001(i) (3) (C))
- You are a health insurer and you want to raise premiums to meet costs. If that increase is deemed “unreasonable” by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, TOUGH. (Sec 1003)
- The government will extract a fee of $2.55 billion from pharmaceutical companies in 2010 (this fee increases to $3 billion in 2012, $3.5 billion in 2017, $4.2 billion in 2018, then settles at $2.8 billion in 2019), based on the percentage of brand-name drugs they sell in the U.S. If you have 10% of the market, you’ll pay $255,000,000 to the government in 2010. Think you, as a pharmaceutical executive, know better how to use that money, say for research and development? TOUGH. (Sec 9008 (b))
- The government will extract a 2.9% excise tax from medical device makers. A company’s share depends on its share of medical device sales in the U.S. You’d rather use that money for R&D? TOUGH. (Sec 1405)
- The government will extract a fee of $6.7 billion annually from insurance companies. A company’s share is based on net premiums + additional charges. Don’t like it? TOUGH.
- If you go for cosmetic surgery, you will pay an additional 5% tax on the cost of the procedure. Think you know how to spend that money better than the government? LIKE YOU NEED TO ASK. (Sec 9017)

- Has the Democratic Party ever enacted a law as atrocious as its government takeover of the American people's healthcare? Has the Democratic Party ever enacted a law so unpopular? Yes and Yes.
In 1854, Democrats controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency. Their top priority was to repeal the Missouri Compromise prohibition of slavery in the northern territories. The author of this infamous legislation, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, was Stephen Douglas, a Democrat Senator from Illinois and owner of a slave plantation in Mississippi.
Senator Douglas claimed the law would be a final solution to the slavery question, so that Congress could move on to other issues. In fact, the Kansas-Nebraska Act sparked a political firestorm. Opponents of slavery - and the police state and economic stagnation that went with it - understood that, if unchecked, the slave system would expand throughout the territories and then the entire nation.
As the Democrat-controlled Supreme Court would soon prove with its 7-2 Dred Scott decision (both Republicans dissenting), pro-freedom Americans feared that the judiciary would uphold the expansion of slavery. Many Democrats were already touting slavery (not for themselves, of course) for poor whites, too. "Free Society!" declared a prominent Democrat newspaper, "We sicken at the name!"
Every American was forced to choose sides. One was either for the free market system or against it; there was no middle ground.
As Alexis De Tocqueville observed: "Socialism is a new form of slavery." Today's congressional Democrats who voted to impose socialized medicine on the nation while exempting themselves should bear in mind Abraham Lincoln's words: "Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally."
Denouncing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Lincoln warned against submitting to political masters: "If there is anything which it is the duty of the whole people to never entrust to any hands but their own, that thing is the preservation and perpetuity, of their own liberties, and institutions."
Not all Democrats went along with the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In protest, Charles Sumner, Salmon P. Chase and others - who would soon join the Republican Party - issued an Appeal of the Independent Democrats in Congress to the People of the United States:
"We arraign [the Kansas-Nebraska Act] as a gross violation of a sacred pledge; as a criminal betrayal of precious rights; as part and parcel of an atrocious plot to exclude from a vast unoccupied region immigrants from the Old World and free laborers from our own States, and convert it into a dreary region of despotism, inhabited by masters and slaves.
We appeal to the people. We warn you that the dearest interests of freedom and the Union are in imminent peril.
For ourselves, we shall resist it by speech and vote, and with all the abilities which God has given us. Even if overcome in the impending struggle, we shall not submit. We shall go home to our constituents, erect anew the standard of freedom, and call on the people to come to the rescue of the country from the domination of slavery. We will not despair; for the cause of human freedom is the cause of God."
