Today is Veterans Day and ironically one of the greatest tributes paid to American veterans was made by a former deadly foe. A PBS documentary, Iwo Jima: From Combat to Comrades, broadcast yesterday and available online, featured the 70th reunion on Iwo Jima of veterans of that bloody battle. Among the veterans was Tsuruji Akikusa, a former radioman in the Imperial Japanese Navy who was badly wounded. As one of the very few Japanese survivors of Iwo Jima and one of the last who is still alive, he is quite a rarity. However, what makes him really special is the incredible tribute to American veterans that he made starting at the 25:30 mark of the video.

On Ronald Reagan's 101st Birthday, His Legacy Lives On
Today marks President Ronald Reagan's 101st birthday. Born in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan made his journey west to Iowa as a radio broadcaster, then on to California to take Hollywood by storm. He crossed America as a spokesman for General Electric, and then -- after discovering the import of conservative values -- entered the political arena, where he would ultimately lead his fellow citizens out of a wilderness of self-doubt, helping the country come to see that it could be morning in America once again.

Many of you are still wondering about the current revenue forecast that was just announced. I would like to share some of my thoughts in regards to where Oregon stands in these difficult economic times.
The economy seems to be improving; however, we need to move ahead cautiously. Many of Oregon's families are still struggling to make ends meet with rising gas and food prices and earning less! It is vitally important we use your hard-earned tax dollars wisely and be prudent in balancing the 2011-2013 budget.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and concerns during the next weeks.

Fast Facts...
- First quarter personal income tax collections were down $22 million (3.5 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Fourth quarter corporate income tax collections were up $3.6 million (5.2 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Oregon personal income was down $2.1 billion (1.5 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Oregon employment was up 15,028 jobs (0.9 percent) from the March 2011 forecast.
- Our numbers sure look better compared to the 2009-2011 budget, but history has shown that state economic and revenue forecasts are often wrong. That's why it's important to maintain significant reserves to prevent further cuts in the future.
- It's all about jobs, and this revenue forecast depends on robust job growth. More jobs mean more revenue to fund the programs and services we depend on.
- In the final weeks of session, the Legislature should refocus on private sector job creation and pass reforms that allow us to attract and retain employers.

- The City of Corvallis invites interested persons to apply for a position on the Corvallis Historic Resources Commission (HRC). Members of the HRC receive no compensation and attend 1-2 regular evening meetings, typically 2-3 hours in length each month. Three positions for three-year terms will be filled beginning on July 1, 2011. One position beginning on July 1, 2011 will be filled for a two-year term. Qualified applicants will demonstrate a positive interest, competence or knowledge in historic preservation; prior experience in quasi-judicial decision making; and/or a community-wide perspective on balancing multiple objectives associated with community planning. Also need a strong background in one of the following fields: Archeology, Architectural History, Conservation, Cultural Anthropology, Curation, Engineering, Folklore, Historic Architecture, Historic Landscape Architecture, Historic Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation Planning, Historic Preservation, History.
- The Corvallis City Council invites interested persons to apply for the vacant positions on the Corvallis Planning Commission. The Commission consists of nine members. New positions will extend from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014. Members of the Planning Commission receive no compensation and attend an average of two regular Planning Commission evening meetings each month and an average of an additional special meeting or two each month, either in the evening or in the day.

Today is National Medal of Honor Day
Operation Homefront - "Today is National Medal of Honor Day! Designated by Congress, March 25 is a day set aside to honor the recipients of the nation's highest military honor."

Honoring a fallen soldier
Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City , Georgia , just south of Atlanta , on June 11, 2009 . The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough , Georgia . A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.
Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places. Oregon House honors Jean Mater (1916-2008)
On Thursday, March 26, 2009, Representative Sara Gelser (D-Dist. 16) presented a House Concurrent Resolution (HCR-1) in tribute to Jean Mater's great life and work in front of the Oregon House of Representatives. James Mater and Catherine Mater were introduced and watched from the gallery as the resolution was presented, discussed and adopted.
