Van Hollen: Let’s ‘Look at Moving Forward’ on Slavery Reparations

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., recently said Congress should “look at moving forward” on legislation to consider reparations for slavery. Though hardly a firm commitment to compensatory payments for African-Americans, the remark was nonetheless a striking election-year pronouncement from the U.S. Senate candidate and top Democrat on the House Budget Committee.

Terrible Suffering in Iraq: Thousands of Civilians Face Death, Displacement and Slavery

A new United Nations report has tried to count the civilian toll of continuing conflict in Iraq, largely at the hands of Islamic State militants, and the numbers are "staggering."
"Even the obscene casualty figures fail to accurately reflect exactly how terribly civilians are suffering in Iraq," Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Jan. 19.

Global supermarkets selling shrimp peeled by slaves

Every morning at 2 a.m., they heard a kick on the door and a threat: Get up or get beaten. For the next 16 hours, No. 31 and his wife stood in the factory that owned them with their aching hands in ice water. They ripped the guts, heads, tails and shells off shrimp bound for overseas markets, including grocery stores and all-you-can-eat buffets across the United States.

Wilberforce Redux: What the Planned Parenthood Videos Mean

The Planned Parenthood videos are a moral turning point in the battle for protection and respect for all human beings in all stages and stations of life. My hope is that it will be a practical turning point as well, leading to the legal protection of all children in the womb. But at the very least, it is a moral turning point.
The closest parallel to the modern pro-life movement is the anti-slavery movement of the late 18th and the 19th century. Both movements have defended the helpless and the weak against the strong, and both movements defended the full humanity of all human beings.

The Atlantic Slave Trade in Two Minutes

Usually, when we say “American slavery” or the “American slave trade,” we mean the American colonies or, later, the United States. But as we discussed in Episode 2 of Slate’s History of American Slavery Academy, relative to the entire slave trade, North America was a bit player.

Did You Know the First Legal Slave Owner in America Was a Black Man?

Here’s something you won’t read about in the US history books. The first legal slave owner in America was black and he owned white slaves.
Anthony Johnson (BC 1600 – 1670) was an Angolan who achieved freedom in the early 17th century Colony of Virginia.
Johnson was captured in his native Angola by an enemy tribe and sold to Arab (Muslim) slave traders. He was eventually sold as an indentured servant to a merchant working for the Virginia Company.

Townhall: The Left is Killing King’s Dream

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., August 28, 1963 | AP Photo
By Michael Schaus - The spectacle of the pro-Obama rally yesterday, disguised insufficiently as a tribute to one of America’s civil rights heroes, was rife with an undercurrent of unintentional irony. After all, it was the Democrat Party that led the Confederacy in the Civil War, opposed the civil rights legislation throughout the 20th Century, and used the federal government to intimidate would-be civil rights activists. The event, however, did awaken a renewed interest in the words of Martin Luther King Jr. for many Americans. One line, above all else, from his 1963 Address at the Lincoln Memorial speaks today as a testament to Liberalism’s callous, and repeated, failings in the black community.

Perryman: Obama's References to His Party's Racist Past

#2
President Barack Obama is one of the only black elected officials and one of the only black leaders in modern-day history - who has openly discussed how badly Democrats have treated black voters and he does so in his book: Dreams From My Father. The book highlights a conversation where black Democrats referred to their relationship with the Democratic Party as “Plantation Politics.” (p. 147). Obama reports that during this conversation blacks in the barber shop asked themselves, why do they keep voting Democrat when blacks have “the worst jobs, the worst housing, Police brutality rampant, … and we all line up and vote the straight Democratic ticket. Sell our soul for a Christmas Turkey. White folks spitting in our faces and we'd reward them with the vote.”

Obama also states in his book that some white Democrats said they would “vote Republican before voting for a black [Democrat] to be mayor” of Chicago. (p. 148)

During Obama's Victory Speech on November 5, 2008 he talked about Ann Nixon Cooper, a black woman who could not vote because of his party's voting policies in the South and during that same speech he referred to “the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, the bridge in Selma and the preacher from Atlanta,” - all racist situations that occurred in areas where Democrat elected officials were in control.

He also talked about his party's racist past during his March 18, 2008 speech regarding Rev. Wright. The then Senator Obama said, “…so many of the disparities that exist in the African American community today can be traced directly to the inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the [Democrat's] brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow.”

Obama, a student of history knew that his party made the following statements in several of their national platforms:

DEMOCRATS' 1844 PLATFORM for SLAVERY

“All efforts by the abolitionist and others made to induce Congress to interfere with questions of slavery... are calculated to lead to the most alarming and dangerous consequences....”

DEMOCRATS' 1852 PLATFORM for SLAVERY

“The Democratic Party standing on this national platform will abide by and adhere to a faithful execution of the acts [meaning Fugitive Slave Laws]... for reclaiming fugitives.... The Democratic Party will resist all attempts at renewing in Congress or out of it, the agitation of the slavery question, under whatever shape or color the attempt is made.”

Not one Democrat voted for the 13th Amendment to end slavery and as a party, Democrats did not vote to pass the 14th Amendment to make blacks citizens nor did they support the 15th Amendment to give blacks the right to vote.

Obama is one of the only black leaders who have acknowledge these wrongs by his party. so with this lawsuit we are simply asking: based on what he knows about his party's racist past and how they have treated black folks, why is he and the leaders of his party reluctant to issue a public apology?

Hard America/Soft America

Via email, INSPIRE AND IGNITE (Hat tip: Linda Weimer) - Earlier this decade, Michael Barone wrote a book entitled “Hard America, Soft America: Competition vs. Coddling and the Battle for America’s Future”. His premise was that we are becoming an America of soft people demanding entitlements at other people’s expense, unwilling or unable to stand on our own and looking to the government instead of ourselves to provide our every need.

Our school system typifies this softness. The system avoids competition and promotes instead a soft concept of self esteem that elevates how one feel’s above the reality of actual merit. Consequences are avoided at all costs...failure is so demeaning that we dare not even try. Passed along from grade to grade without the barest of essential skills, we are producing Soft Americans with no understanding of the real world.

Hard America, on the other hand, plays for keeps. People are not advanced because they “feel good” about themselves, but on the basis of solid performance. In Hard America there are real consequences to failure. But, Hard America is in danger of being overwhelmed by Soft America.

If you have any doubt about how soft we are becoming, consider the mantra, “Too big to fail”. The bailouts of the automotive industry, the banking and financial segments of our economy and the push for universal healthcare are all attempts to remove the consequences of poor choices and proof positive of the ascendancy of “Soft America” today.

But, the problem is, to quote Barone, “Soft America depends on the productivity, creativity and competence of Hard America, which protects the country and pays its bills”.

As we descend deeper and deeper into the “comfort” of a soft life of victim hood where no one is accountable for their choices and big brother will always ride to the rescue; we are destroying the essential American character. Our country was built upon character which is self reliant, courageous in the face of adversity and unwilling to trade away personal freedom for the government’s promise of security.

From the Pilgrims who faced long odds and hard times to pursue freedom regardless of the cost; to the signers of our declaration who pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to bring freedom to these shores...from the rugged pioneers who overcame significant hardship to expand our borders from coast to coast; to our astronauts risking their lives to expand our borders to the moon and beyond…from the Minutemen at Concord to our brave soldiers buried across Europe, the American character has resisted the easy way...has stood firmly for personal freedom and rejected the idea that someone else owed us an easy life.

Elections Have Consequences

Soft America won an overwhelming victory in 2008. Soft America has savagely
attacked the concept of merit and competency. Soft America has undermined the free enterprise system that built the greatest nation in history and has denigrated success in favor of handouts and protectionism. Soft America has consistently mocked and discouraged the small business entrepreneur; preferring instead to “Spread the wealth around”. Soft America is attempting to void the consequences of bad choices and that will ultimately destroys character and the work ethic so critical to achieving the American dream.

If Soft America prevails, the impact on the American spirit and America’s future will be grim…the drive to turn us all into beggars dependent on the federal government’s benevolence for our daily needs will gain great momentum.

To overcome the accelerating trend lines of the last few years, Hard America must be willing to once again find the inner strength to stand firm for the bedrock principles of limited government, personal accountability and free markets. The cost to right the ship of state, restore fiscal sanity and rebuild the American dream for our children will not be easy and will not be accomplished without personal sacrifice.

ARE WE READY TO PAY THE PRICE TO RESTORE AMERICAN?

If we truly want a smaller government, balanced budgets and a free market
economy, we must decide what federal programs we are willing to forgo.

This is not a rhetorical question. The answer is NOT what others must give up; the answer is not a litany of bloated federal bureaucracies that we must shut down. The question is much more personal... if we are to be successful in restoring the America our founders intended, we must decide what price we are personally willing to pay. For example:

As a retired military officer, am I willing to have my retired pay and benefits frozen for 5 years?

As a social security recipient, are you willing to have your benefits frozen for 5 years?

As a federal employee, are you willing to have your pay and benefits frozen for 5 years?

As a public employee, are you willing to renegotiate your retirement benefits in order to make the program sustainable?

Will you willing to abandon your unemployment check and diligently seek work... any work to meet your financial needs?

Are we willing to allow sound fiduciary principles to guide a restructuring of our social security benefits to ensure the long term viability of the program?

Are we willing to live within our means, rejecting federal attempts to buy us off with a new car or make our mortgage payment or pay off our personal credit cards?

The list is surely much longer as we consider the personal sacrifices we must be willing to make to restore America. The critical point is that without personal sacrifice, all our proclamations of concern for the debt...for the future of our country...our public outcry demanding smaller government are hollow and empty.

Without a commitment to personal sacrifice, all our protestations are simply selfishly motivated calls for others to sacrifice for our benefit. If smaller government is to become a reality; if we are truly to have a government living within its means, then the sacrifice must be shared by all.

The only path to a smaller government is to reduce spending, reduce or eliminate wasteful programs and provide an environment where the free market can function without artificial barriers.

Once we have committed to the personal sacrifice needed to restore sanity in the federal government, then we have the moral authority to suggest major cuts in other parts of the federal government. Just a few suggestions:

Eliminate the Energy Department and the Education Department

Reduce the Dept of Defense, State Dept and Justice Dept by 10%

Reduce the IRS by 80% and replace the income tax with a fair tax

Reduce Federal employees by a minimum of 33% (from 2.1 million to 1.4 million)

Make earmarks illegal.

Obviously, this list can be expanded (I welcome you thoughts). But before we rise up and demand these kinds of changes, we must signal our willingness to bear our share of the sacrifice.

This email has not addressed increasing federal revenue... as President Reagan said, “Our government doesn’t tax too little, it spends too much.” If our goal is smaller government, then our attention must be on reducing spending and the overall size of the federal government.

That said, in principle, when the government is functioning properly, it creates an environment when business can prosper and grow. In so doing, the federal revenues will grow accordingly. We must resist the liberal’s first reflex to raise taxes to meet revenue needs. While it may seem counter intuitive, if you raise taxes, you ultimately lower revenue while if you lower taxes, you raise revenue (Google “Laffer Curve”).

With common sense and courage, and a renewed dependence on our Creator we can overcome the progressive’s agenda and restore America.

A young mother was being interviewed on a national network recently. She was expressing her concern that the government’s approach to the mortgage crisis was to bail out home owners unable to meet their financial obligations while she and her husband adjusted their life style, lived within their means and struggled from month to month to make their house payment. She asked where is the lobbyist standing up for my family and the millions like us. The interviewer asked her if she and her husband had ever considered missing a couple of payments so that they could qualify for the government assistance.

Her reply was striking, “NO, not ever...we weren’t raised that way.”

Thank God for Hard American willing to stand by their principles and make hard choices rather than being bought by a federal government bent on making us all beggars.

Hard America, we make a statement about what kind of nation we will leave future generation... one strong and free or one in debt and bondage? Make your voices heard!

Democrats enact their "black codes" to oppress African-Americans

GRAND OLD PARTISAN (Michael Zak) - On this day in 1865, the Democrat-controlled legislature of Mississippi passed the nation's first "black codes." These were laws that the Democrats of the post-Civil War South enacted to impose near-slavery on African-Americans.

According to these Democrat laws, African-Americans could not:

vote
serve on juries
testify against white people
own guns
travel without permission
assemble for political purposes
own farmland
be outdoors at night
change jobs without permission

Democrats decreed that all African-Americans had to:

sign annual labor contracts with white masters
be deferential to all white people
be apprenticed (in practice, enslaved) to white masters until adulthood
work only in agriculture and a few other occupations

After winning a two-thirds majority in Congress, Republicans swept away the black codes by passing, over the veto of Democrat President Andrew Johnson, the Civil Rights Act and other Reconstruction legislation. These laws guaranteed full civil rights to African-Americans, many of whom then entered politics. As Democrats regained control of the South in the 1870s, they again oppressed African-Americans with a new set of regulations known as "Jim Crow" laws.

A Republican President issued the Emancipation Proclamation

"On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL) issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Effective at yearend, all slaves in Confederate-controlled territory would be "forever free." ∴ Ill-informed critics of the first Republican President Lincoln fault the Emancipation Proclamation for only freeing slaves in areas not yet under the control of the U.S. government, but -- because of the Democratic Party's resolute defense of slavery -- the federal government had the necessary authority only over so-called "property" of the rebels. ∴ Within two years, the Republican-controlled 38th Congress followed up this great advance by enacting the 13th Amendment, banning slavery throughout the nation."

Republicans repealed the Fugitive Slave Act

GRAND OLD PARTISAN, 6/28/2010 by Michael Zak - On this day in 1864, the Republican-controlled 38th Congress repealed the notorious Fugitive Slave Act. The law had enabled slave catchers to operate freely in northern states and to kidnap any African-American residing there. Merely by attesting that the person was an escaped slave, a slave catcher could chain him and drag him away to a southern slave market. Moreover, the law required all free people as well as all local and state and federal government officials to assist slave catchers. ∴ A pair of Democrats, Senator James Mason (D-VA) and Senator Andrew Butler (D-SC), had written the Fugitive Slave Act. ∴ The bill repealing the Fugitive Slave Act was written by a Republican congressman from Ohio, Rufus Spalding [pictured]. A Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, signed it into law.

Tim Kaine and the Democrats' Southern Strategy

4/30/2010 by Michael Zak, author of Back to Basics for the Republican Party - "After my article last week, Michael Steele and the Southern Strategy, now is time for some truth-telling about the Democratic Party. The Democrats' own southern strategy was far, far worse than even [the] worst accusations aimed at the Republicans. In his recent speech criticizing the GOP's so-called southern strategy, RNC Chairman Michael Steele scored big points, for the other team. Instead of criticizing his own party, he would do well to focus the public's attention on the appalling heritage of the Democratic Party - the party of slavery and big government, socialism and the Ku Klux Klan. "The Republican Party, on the contrary [to the Democrats], holds that this government was instituted to secure the blessings of freedom, and that slavery is an unqualified evil. [(Republicans] will oppose in all its length and breadth the modern Democratic idea that slavery is as good as freedom." Read more at the Grand Old Partisan blog: Know Your Republican Heritage... Seven Score and Four Years Ago

GRAND OLD PARTISAN BLOG, 12/15/2009 by Michael Zak - The United States emerged from the Civil War a vastly different county. No longer could Democrats hinder economic progress so as to protect the slave system. Once most Democrats in Congress had gone with the Confederacy, Republicans met little opposition in enacting their pro-growth economic agenda: a national banking system and a national currency, free land for farmers in the Plains states, land-grant colleges, the transcontinental railroad, and other structural reforms that soon made the United States the wealthiest country in the world. Harry Reid's 'slavery' comment: Revisionist history, straight up!

December 7, 2009: "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has got the GOP up in arms with these controversial comments on health reform. He says the GOP's opposition to passing the bill is comparable to those in the past who opposed an end to slavery and women's suffrage." --DailyBeastVideo

Hey, Harry! The supporters of slavery were DEMOCRATS (12/7/2009 by Michael Zak)

Today, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) said that people who oppose socialized medicine are comparable to those opposed freeing the slaves. Another outrageous lie from the Democrats!

Just as outrageous is that, by ignoring their party's heritage, the Republican Party has allowed Democrats and their lefty media allies to mislead millions of Americans about the true history of the Grand Old Party.

Every Republican, and I mean every Republican, should know that it was the Republican Party that freed the slaves and that it was the Democrats who wanted to keep African-Americans in chains. Democrats denounced President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL) for his Emancipation Proclamation, and congressional Democrats voted unanimously against the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery. In fact, so long as the GOP appreciated its heritage, the Democrats was known as the Slaveocrat Party.

To quote my own book: "The more we Republicans know about the history of our party, the more the Democrats will worry about the future of theirs."

LETTER: Remember Republican history

Corvallis Gazette-Times OPINION/Letters, February 1, 2009
"Remember Republican History" by Jeff Limón

Republicans invented the Civil Rights movement. It was the post-Civil War Republicans who pushed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments (banning slavery, conferring equal protection under the law to the former slaves and giving the former slaves of the right to vote.)

These initiatives were staunchly supported by Republicans and furiously opposed by Democrats. We also pioneered women’s suffrage and were largely responsible for the passage of the 19th amendment.

Yet today, no one dares credit Republicans for these gains. No one remembers that when it came to voting on the Civil Right Act of 1964, a larger percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted “yes” in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. No one mentions that Sen. Robert Byrd, a former Klansman, filibustered against the Civil Rights bill for 14 hours.

I am a Republican because I believe in the fundamental wisdom and intelligence of ordinary people, just as the first Republicans believed that the slaves possessed these qualities, and more.

Lincoln referred to Frederick Douglass as “one of the most meritorious men in all of America.” Lincoln’s successor, Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, used racial slurs to describe Douglass.

Lincoln believed that the former slaves could govern themselves just as Republicans today believe that good government means less government. Johnson believed that if the former slaves governed themselves, they would “descend into barbarism.”

I believe that Lincoln got it right, and I am proud of the Republicans’ contribution to civil rights and to America.

Bet you didn't know this

From Maggie's Farm
Posted by The Barrister
Black lawn jockeys - old horse hitching posts - used to be common sights but have largely disappeared across the Eastern US. Some have been changed to whiteface. How many folks realize that these statues of grooms, which many assume to be degrading images of servitude, were used as the secret road-markers for the Underground Railroad? As such, they deserve to be preserved with pride and pleasure for the good and just service they provided to runaway, freedom-seeking slaves.

Oftentimes, PC insanity destroys meaningful history.
