Colorado state pension plan to miss full-funding target by 14 years

Colorado’s pension plan is on track to be fully funded by 2055 — 14 years after the 2041 target date set by the Colorado Legislature in 2010. Now, lawmakers will need to decide if they want to stick to the 2041 target date, or agree that it will take longer than they planned for the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association to have the money to pay for the promised benefits to PERA’s 529,000.

EPA’s Toxic Mega-spill May Have Been Deliberate, Critics Suggest

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has made a major mess of the Animas River in Colorado and beyond, and now, some analysts are suggesting it may have even been a deliberate plot to bilk taxpayers and shut down mining in the region. Critics of the EPA are pointing to a letter by geologist Dave Taylor, published a week before the toxic spill, warning residents to protect themselves from the EPA and predicting a similar disaster in the same area purposely caused by the controversial agency. Now, almost as if on cue, the EPA is seeking more money and more power to deal with the crisis that it created.

Colorado Senate Votes to Repeal Expanded Background Checks

On March 25, the Colorado Senate voted to repeal the expanded background checks that Democrats rammed through as part of the draconian gun control package that was implemented on July 1, 2013.

Democrats justified the passage of expanded background checks by pointing to “mass shootings” at the Aurora movie theater and Sandy Hook Elementary School. In both instances, the lawmakers failed to note that federal background checks were already in place and failed to stop either gunman.

Colorado Democrats block bill aiming to keep boys out of girls’ changing rooms

DENVER, Colorado, February 6, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- In the wake of allegations that a boy presenting himself as female harassed girls in a high school restroom, lawmakers in Colorado tried this week to walk back some of the damage done by the state’s controversial transgender bathroom law, which mandates that self-identified “transgender” individuals be allowed to use the bathroom and changing facilities of their choice, regardless of biological sex.  Rep. Kim Ransom, R-Littleton, introduced a bill that would have permitted facility operators to decide for themselves whether to permit cross-gender use of sex-segregated facilities, without putting themselves at risk of discrimination lawsuits.

Another 2,000 Insurance Policies Cancelled In Colorado

More than 2,000 more Coloradans had their health insurance plans cancelled as a result of the Affordable Care Act, according to a letter from the state regulatory agency to state Senate Republicans. Following a dust-up earlier this year between Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and the Division of Insurance, Republicans have requested regular updates on policies that are cancelled because they don’t conform to Obamacare or because companies are getting out of the individual insurance market. Udall disputed the original number of nearly a quarter million cancellations in the immediate wake of Obamacare’s rollout in late 2013, arguing that almost all of those whose plans were canceled were given options for renewing them early.

Puny mouse threatens to delay Colorado flood recovery

Colorado Republican Rep. Cory Gardner is demanding an emergency waiver from the Endangered Species Act for a species of mouse that threatens to delay flood recovery in Colorado.  The Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse is a threatened species under the ESA, meaning that any governmental action—such as flood recovery—must first consider potential impacts on the tiny animal’s habitat, even if that habitat was also destroyed in the flood that wiped out entire Colorado communities in September.

The Colorado recalls dealt a serious blow to gun-control advocates. Here’s why.

Something pretty remarkable happened in Colorado on Tuesday night. John Morse, the Democratic president of the state Senate, was recalled from office. So was Democratic state Sen. Angela Giron.

Taken together, the losses arguably represent the biggest defeat for gun-control advocates since the push for expanded background checks failed in the U.S. Senate earlier this year.

Sage Grouse Debate Prompts Scrutiny of Far-Reaching Federal Species Law

WASHINGTON — The federal government listed Johnston’s Frankenia as an endangered species in 1984 insisting the special protection was needed because there were only 1,500 of the Texas shrubs left on the planet.

But the government made a mistake; there are at least nine million of the plants living a healthy existence throughout the state and in northern Mexico, yet the shrub remains on the federal Endangered Species List as a protected plant because the de-listing efforts that started a decade ago have become too cumbersome to complete.

Now as debate heats up on Capitol Hill over the proposed listing of the Sage Grouse as an endangered species, a key concern of Colorado Republican Rep. Scott Tipton is that it may never be de-listed, even if the population recovers.

Obama Signs $787 Billion Stimulus Package - President Obama on Tuesday signed into law the largest spending bill in U.S. history, a package he pledges will save millions of jobs and bring the country back from the brink of economic catastrophe.

In doing so, the president marked a huge legislative victory less than a month into his term. The Senator stands before the fixed gaze of the CSPAN cameras in the always empty Senate chamber. His hands hold a stack of paper over a thousand pages thick. He observes, in a voice shaded with resignation and contempt, that no member of the Senate, himself included, has read the endless laundry list of fools’ gold nuggets that a majority are about to vote into law. Then, in what is less a gesture than a simple removal of his hands, he lets the pile drop to the floor where it lands with a sodden thump. The future of what was once a republic is smeared on the sheets of tumbled pile of paper on the Senate floor.

We do not know what this "future" holds within its pages. We know only that no one with the power to approve or disapprove this future that has now been decreed has read it.
