A bit of good news for a change

Christians have just won a major legal battle. First, the backstory: For several years, it has become standard operating procedure for Christians to be threatened and attacked by Muslims at the Dearborn Arab Festival. Christians have also been threatened by the police and have been arrested for exercising their right to free speech. This piece is about an attack that occurred in 2012. Michigan Town Votes to Deny Building Permit for Mosque. This is How the Crowd Reacted…

The planning commission of Sterling Heights, Michigan voted on Thursday to deny a building permit for the construction of a new mosque in the Detroit suburb. When the vote was announced, the reaction of the crowd was unmistakable.
As reported by WXYZ in Detroit, city hall was filled to capacity with 240 people anxiously awaiting the results. When the 9-0 vote was announced, the hall erupted in applause, with hundreds more outside chanting “No more mosques” and “God Bless America.”

That's a 'Renewable Energy' Job? If You Say So

The statewide news site MLive recently published a column by the owner of a solar panel installation company claiming the state’s renewable energy sector has produced an estimated 82,600 jobs.
Dean Berden, owner of DB Solar in Snover, wrote: “In recent years, Michigan's renewable sector has already seen tremendous growth, with more than an estimated 82,600 jobs in renewable power industries, energy efficiency and other conservation services.” The column links to a report called, “Powering Up Michigan," and attributes the 82,600 jobs number to a 2010 Bureau of Labor and Statistics report.

U Michigan Department Chair: We Should ‘Hate Republicans’

A University of Michigan department chairwoman has published an article titled, “It’s Okay To Hate Republicans,” which will probably make all of her conservative students feel really comfortable and totally certain that they’re being graded fairly.

“I hate Republicans,” communications department chairwoman and professor Susan J. Douglas boldly declares in the opening of the piece. “I can’t stand the thought of having to spend the next two years watching Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Ted Cruz, Darrell Issa or any of the legions of other blowhards denying climate change, thwarting immigration reform or championing fetal ‘personhood.’”

34 States Call for Constitutional Convention — and Possible Rewrite

Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter of California recently asked House Speaker Boehner for clarification as to where the state count stands, and if Michigan has tipped the two-thirds majority needed to make the convention call. ✧ "With the recent decision by Michigan lawmakers, it is important that the House — and those of us who support a balanced budget amendment — determine whether the necessary number of states have acted and the appropriate role of Congress should be in this case," Hunter wrote to Boehner. ✧ Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told The Washington Times that the Republican leader will have his lawyers review the request. ✧ What may give the speaker pause in his decision is that several states long ago rescinded their calls for a convention, although there is nothing in the Constitution that allows them to do that. ✧ Also, states have made the requests in differing forms...

Michigan to become 24th 'Right-to-Work' state

Michigan is about to become the 24th right-to-work state in the United States. This afternoon its House passed right-to-work legislation 57-50. The Senate followed suit and passed it 22-16. Gov. Rick Snyder (R) is expected to sign the bills into law, as right-to-work was one of his highest priorities of the legislative session. ✧ President Barack Obama, naturally, opposed the bill, which makes it illegal for unions to skim the paychecks of non-union workers in the state. Otherwise, right-to-work has no effect on collective bargaining rights. The president’s opposition is all about supporting Big Labor’s agenda against the interests of workers. Read More......

FEDERALIST PAUPERS, 12/2/2010 Title: Why the Terrorists Can Never Win - The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That’s great. There were over 600,000 hunters. ✧ Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world – more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined – deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay. ✧ But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan’s 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia, and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.

These numbers are part of why those of us who grew up in rural parts of the country simply don’t comprehend the gun-grabbing impulses of some. Every single year, millions of Americans carry high power rifles into the woods and more or less do as they please – some shoot at deer, some just drink a lot – and it is a complete non-story. The number of people injured and killed by these guns will pale in comparison to those injured and killed in driving accidents during the same time period. ✧ But however well or badly we handle our guns, woe will befall he who thinks he can conquer America. CFIF/FREEDOM LINE. 2/5/2010 Posted by Ashton Ellis via National Review Online - The next time you hear a politician wax about the virtues of tax credits and special deals to lure in businesses, think about this home state businessman’s frustration with the practice in Michigan.

“Our legislators are busy voting on tax credits to a myriad of targeted industries, hoping that one of these ‘new-economy’ firms will save our state from collapse,” protests Bill Jackson of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce. “Isn’t it time government puts an end to picking winners and losers and gives every Michigan job provider a ‘tax credit’?”

Indeed. The logic is undeniable. If lower taxes are good for one business, why aren’t they good for all? They are, but that isn’t the point. For progressives like Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and her colleagues in the Democratic Party, legislating through the tax code is business as usual; especially if it allows them to prop up companies and industries that align with progressive dogma of a “green” economy. In reality, the kinds of tax incentives aren’t breaks; they’re exercises in fiscal discrimination.
