Vox: How Venezuela’s socialist dream collapsed into a nightmare
Venezuela is in the midst of a stunning social, political, and economic collapse. The country of 30 million people is facing dire food and medicine shortages, frequent power outages, serious political unrest, the world’s highest inflation rate, rampant violent crime, and one of the world’s highest murder rates. Earlier this month, Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, declared a state of emergency. --In short, Venezuela has become the world’s most visibly failing state. --It wasn’t supposed to go like this. Not so long ago, Venezuela’s socialist revolution attracted its share of fellow travelers — first-world idealists hungry for the next earthly utopia.

Obama uses Hiroshima visit as opportunity to urge no nukes
HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) - With an unflinching look back at a painful history, President Barack Obama stood on the hallowed ground of Hiroshima on Friday and declared it a fitting place to summon people everywhere to embrace the vision of a world without nuclear weapons. As the first American president to visit the city where the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb, Obama came to acknowledge - but not apologize for - an act many Americans see as a justified end to a brutal war that Japan started with a sneak attack at Pearl Harbor. Some 140,000 people died after...

NEW YORK— At the RoboUniverse expo in New York City, robots of all shapes and sizes were being put to work. Obama races to cement the big Pacific Rim trade deal that all his potential successors oppose
President Obama is racing against the clock to cement a massive Pacific Rim trade deal that all of his potential successors oppose, with his administration eyeing a looming fight on Capitol Hill while starting to implement as much of the complicated pact as it can. --The effort begins in Vietnam, where Obama spent the last three days touting the merits of the 12-nation Trans Pacific Partnership, which would link 40% of the global economy, and reassuring Vietnamese leaders key to the deal that Congress will ultimately overcome the thorny politics of trade and ratify the agreement. Climate change doubts? Burn ’em!
Although no one mentioned this, it seems to me that the Portland schools now face a problem: What to do with books and other material doubting that mankind's use of fossil fuels is mainly responsible for climate change. I suggest a solution in the spirit of the Portland School Board's decision last week to ban such material from the schools: Have students pile up the offending books in a great big heap and set them on fire. When the all-encompassing Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) regulation was first proposed in 2013, we addressed this inherent enslavement of every American to federal authority. Does the term “enslavement” hit a raw nerve… good. The article, 21st century Slavery – HUD vs MLK, took the issue of a federal agency dispensing zoning directives for neighborhoods, your neighborhood, to the crux of the problem – the creation of a new federal plantation.

TSJ: Why is state selling a forest without competitive bids?
In August 2015, the Oregon Land Board — Gov. Kate Brown, Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins and Treasurer Ted Wheeler — voted to sell roughly 82,450 acres of “Common School Trust Lands” within the Elliott State Forest because the state was losing money on those lands. --Under Oregon law, School Trust Lands are supposed to make money for schools. --Given the ongoing losses, the board reached the correct decision. Unfortunately, the sale protocol adopted by the Board is bizarre. The board will establish a price for the land based on appraisals, and that will be the only price accepted. If you dare to offer $1 more, your offer will be declared “non-responsive.”
