Podemos propose pact to lock conservatives out of power [Spain]

The leader of Spain's anti-austerity party Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, on Friday proposed forming a government with the Socialists, making a left-wing governing alliance more likely after last month's inconclusive election. Iglesias told a news conference he had informed King Felipe VI of "our desire to form a government of change with the Socialists and the United Left" and that he would seek the post of deputy prime minister.

Spain's ghost airport: The €1BILLION transport hub closed after just three years that's now falling into rack and ruin

It was the billion euro airport designed to cater for Spain's booming economy - serving both city and coast via a state-of-the-art high speed rail link.

Projected to take the overflow from Madrid's Barajas airport, some 150 miles to the north, Ciudad Real's flagship transport hub was to be a symbol of modern Spain's affluence.

But sadly it has proved to be one of a number of many white elephants for the nation, shutting down in April after just three years of operation.

A Quixotic Pursuit: Tilting at Green Windmills

WASHINGTON POST, 6/25/2009 by George F. Will (Hat tip: John H. Detweiler) - The Spanish professor is puzzled. Why, Gabriel Calzada wonders, is the U.S. president recommending that America emulate the Spanish model for creating "green jobs" in "alternative energy" even though Spain's unemployment rate is 18.1 percent -- more than double the European Union average -- partly because of spending on such jobs? Calzada, 36, an economics professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, has produced a report that, if true, is inconvenient for the Obama administration's green agenda, and for some budget assumptions that are dependent upon it.
