Sotomayor Helps Puerto Rico Argue Its Bankruptcy Case
Before Tuesday, I’d have said that Puerto Rico had no chance to win its legal fight to let its municipalities and utilities declare bankruptcy. That's how the island hopes to resolve its overwhelming debt problems, but the federal bankruptcy code says that it can't.

Horowitz: Will Justice Sotomayor Recuse Herself from the upcoming Obama Amnesty Case?
Our judicial branch of government is irrevocably broken, even more so than the other two branches. To begin with, the entire premise of the judiciary being the final arbiter over constitutional questions is wrong. They have usurped power beyond the imagination of our Founders, even those who were skeptical of Article III. Worse, they refuse to use the Constitution as originally conceived as the guideline for determining the constitutionality of laws.

Congress: Two major issues, one goes under the radar
NATIONAL FEDERATION OF REPUBLICAN WOMEN (via email), 7/14/2009 - THE HILL: "The Senate Judiciary Committee began confirmation hearings for Sonia Sotomayor [yesterday], July 13." Meanwhile... "Health-care proposals are now being presented in both the House and the Senate. President Obama met on Monday with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY), in order to discuss the President's health care push."
So, does this mean we will have 24/7 coverage and commentary on the Sotomayor confirmation hearings throughout this week while the health care issue goes unnoticed? Almost seem strategic, doesn't it? --bc Read More......

Sowell: A Tangled Web
Townhall.com, 7/7/2009 by Thomas Sowell - While the recent Supreme Court decision in the New Haven firefighters' case will be welcome news to those who don't think that a gross injustice is O.K. when those on the receiving end are white, the reasoning behind the 5 to 4 decision is a painful reminder that the law is still tangled in a web of assumptions, evasions and contradictions when it comes to racial issues. ∴ Nor have these problems been clarified with the passage of time. On the contrary, the growing complexity and murkiness of civil rights law over the years recalls the painful saying: "Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive." WSJ: The 'Unseen' Deserve Empathy, Too
Judges can do the most good by following the law. - Opinion writer, John Hasnas, uses examples to show that feelings such as sympathy or empathy could hamper a judge from considering the long range effects of a decision by focusing too narrowly on the current situation. "One can empathize with innocent children born with birth defects. Such children and the adversity they face can be seen. One cannot empathize with as-yet-unborn children in rural communities who may not have access to pediatricians if a judicial decision based on compassion raises the cost of medical malpractice insurance. These children are unseen." Read more at WSJ...

Obama picks Sotomayor for Supreme Court
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, selecting a woman who would be the court's first Hispanic justice and a liberal who is unlikely to change its ideological balance. ∴ Sotomayor, 54, is a U.S. appeals court judge who grew up in a public housing project in New York City and is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents. She would replace retiring Justice David Souter, who was part of the court's liberal wing. Read more at Reuters...
A Case Against Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court Justice
NFRW, POLITICAL BRIEFING, 5/25/2009 - President Obama announced his nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Souter. He named a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Sonia Sotomayor. While we applaud the President for nominating a woman with such an impressive personal history, NFRW does not support this nomination. Obama claims that she is a great constitutionalist, does not let her personal opinions affect her decisions, and that she understands her role and the oath of a Supreme Court justice. Obama's claims could not be further from the truth. Read more at NFRW...
