Feds Propose Removing 'He' and 'She' from Regulation to 'Avoid the Gender Binary'

The Department of Labor is seeking to remove the terms "he" and "she" from a regulation prohibiting discrimination in the workforce in an effort to "avoid the gender binary." The agency is also adding "sex stereotyping, transgender status, and gender identity" to the list of types of employment discrimination banned under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. If adopted, the regulation would cost job training centers millions of dollars to change their equal employment opportunity posters to include "gender identity."

‘Extortion’: Why Did the Labor Department ‘Drop the Hammer’ on Oregon Farmers?

Oregon farmers and state officials are furious with the U.S. Labor Department after federal authorities in July put a hold on thousands of dollars worth of blueberries, citing “widespread” record-keeping and minimum wage violations, Eric Mortenson reports for The Oregonian.

“[T]he department invoked a “hot goods” provision of labor law that prohibited shipment of the berries. Labor officials also notified wholesalers that berries from the farms would be subject to the order and should not be processed or shipped,” according to the report.

Employees Urged to Seek Wage Rights

WALL STREET JOURNAL/ECONOMY, 4/6/2010 - The Labor Department is encouraging low-wage and immigrant workers to turn in employers who are shortchanging their pay, as part of an expanding effort to enforce wage and hour rules. Read More at WSJ...
    "It's about making sure that people know we're here and they know how to reach us," said a Labor Department spokesman, who noted protections cover pay for both legal and illegal immigrants who the agency says it won't punish because of their status.
