Newsletter: Benton Co. Republicans, August 7

Bethann Ryker sent us a profound thought that was written by Dr. Adrian Rogers in 1931, and is still so true today:
“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

Obama’s Big Excuse for Raising Taxes! Watch for Dems to Propose a Value Added Tax!
Buried near the bottom of page A10 in Tuesday’s (Aug 4) G-T was a story that reveals that the recession has caused federal tax revenues to take a nosedive!
Here’s the story:
Just as Congress and Pres. Obama are piling a major expansion of health care and other programs on the nation’s budget, the recession is starving the government of tax revenue.
The numbers could hardly be more stark: Tax receipts are on a pace to drop 18 percent this year, the biggest single-year decline since the Great Depression, while the federal deficit balloons to a record $1.8 trillion.

Other figures in an Associated Press analysis underscore the recession’s impact:
  • Individual income tax receipts are down 22 percent from a year ago
  • Corporate income taxes are down 57 percent.
  • Social security tax receipts could drop for only the second time since 1940, and Medicare taxes are on pace to drop for the third time ever.
The last time the government’s revenues were this bleak, the year was 1932 in the midst of the Depression.

So what does this mean to the tax payer? Congress is sure to propose new revenue sources, the most likely of which is a VAT (Value Added Tax) where the consumer pays a tax on every service he purchases. Get a haircut, pay a VAT. Receive a package in the mail, pay a VAT.

The VAT is a chief contributor to destruction of economic growth in European countries. Why should we want to follow Europe’s socialism and stagnation?

Inspector General says TARP bailout could reach $24 TRILLION
Did you think that $700 billion was a huge amount to pay to rescue the nation’s sick financial system?

That’s chump change compared to what the overall price tag could be!
The inspector general in charge of overseeing the Treasury Department’s bank bailout program says the effort could end up costing taxpayers almost $24 TRILLION in a worst-case scenario.

Most of the attention has been focused on the Treasury’s $700 Billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, which Congress hurriedly passed last fall. But about 50 other federal programs that began as early as 2007 could push the government’s total financial support of the private financial sector to at least $23.7 trillion, says the inspector general.

Rep. Darrell Issa (CA), the committee’s top Republican, said the size and scope of the government’s involvement in rescuing the struggling financial sector is mind-boggling. “if you spent a million dollars a day going back to the birth of Christ, that wouldn’t even come close to just $1 Trillion. $23.7 Trillion is a staggering figure.

The Treasury called the inspector general’s figures “inflated.” The estimate also doesn’t take into account the repayment of TARP loans, which has reached about $70 billion.

The inspector general says that the Treasury has repeatedly failed to adopt many recommendations that its office feels are essential to providing “the highest degree of accountability and transparency possible.”

READER’S COMMENTS:
Paul Rentz says,
That was a stunning story on page one of the GT Wednesday. We’re paying $1,553.95 PER HOUR for the stimulus jobs in Oregon! That’s right, the article states that 3,236 were created and lasted an average of 35 hours- 113,260 hours total with $176,000,000 spent! Counting it as a job if they AVERAGED 35 hours total- for the entire job? Here it is again- and I quote,
“In Oregon, where lawmakers are spending $176 million to supplement the federal stimulus, Democrats are taking credit for a remarkable feat: creating 3,236 new jobs in the program's first three months.
But those jobs lasted on average only 35 hours, or about one work week. After that, those workers were effectively back unemployed, according to an Associated Press analysis of state spending and hiring data. By the state's accounting, a job is a job, whether it lasts three hours, three days, three months, or a lifetime.”
And you wonder what Tea Parties are about? And why so many are turning against government run health care? If it wasn’t printed on the front page of our own paper it would be impossible to believe. Now what do we do to end this craziness?

Patricia Anderson invites us to answer the MSNBC poll:
They want to know if 'angry mobs' shouting down politicians in town halls is bad for the democratic process! Give 'em you reaction, pass the word and run the NO vote up higher than it already is...

Do You Think the Disruptions of Town Halls Hurt the Democratic Process?

Several people sent in the following direct quote from the White House site and commented that the White House is collecting a list of people who are against Obamacare. This is making a lot of people very uncomfortable. “There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”

Lars Larson made the following observation: In the best Soviet and East German tradition, the Obama white house is inviting Americans to turn in their friends and neighbors who speak out in opposition to Obamacare. Share this with your friends. I figure some day it will be a point of pride that I got put on the Obama White House enemies list.
