CORVALLIS GAZETTE-TIMES, 6/19 LETTER by John Brenan - Pat Malone’s June 12 response (“Republicans too quick, eager to elude blame for fiscal woes”) to my letter regarding the enormous deficits being run up by the Democrat-controlled Congress offers no justification for the spending binge, but attempts instead to shift the focus away from what the Democrats are doing NOW to what the Republicans did THEN.
What Republican-controlled Congresses did was the basic subject of debate during the 2006 and 2008 elections, and those are history. What the Democrat-controlled Congresses have done and will do becomes the prime topic for the elections of 2010 and 2012, and the Democrats will have to defend those actions.
What they are doing in fiscal 2010 is raising non-defense discretionary spending by 12 percent, and that is their third consecutive year of double-digit increases. What they are doing is taking federal spending next year to $9.6 billion per day on projected revenues of only $6.6 billion per day.
What they have done in fiscal 2009 is increase federal spending to a staggering $3.9 trillion! This is $1.2 trillion more than the last Republican Congress spent. It is an astonishing 28.5 percent of Gross Domestic Product, and the deficit will represent 13 percent of GDP. What’s going to happen if they succeed in adding new social entitlements to the mix?
I repeat: These people have lost all touch with reality and they have us headed toward a train wreck. What Obama Nation is doing to Obama’s nation is an abomination.
